What we’re all about…

Upbeat is owned and operated by local musician Dan Loughrin. Dan is a graduate from the Music program at the University of Guelph, specializing in jazz guitar. In the last fifteen years, he has worked as a multi-instrumentalist in multiple bands ranging from R&B, country, and punk rock, and has toured through venues across Canada. Dan is also an accomplished audio engineer having worked mostly with local independent artists here in Guelph.

With an affinity for finding the funny in music, Dan’s primary teaching goal is for his students to develop a true appreciation of music. In his experience, fostering a sense of fun in the learning process is the most meaningful way to instill passion. Dan strives to refine and streamline his students' practice routines so that they can progress with a well-rounded physical ability and mental understanding of musical technique, harmony, melody, composition, form, and improvisation.

FAQ

Is my child old enough to start taking lessons?
You can start taking lessons as young as 8 years old, but the most effective age for learning muscle memory is between 9-12 years old. The younger the student, the more we focus on fostering enjoyment and appreciation of music (ensuring that they’ll be excited to develop their skills further)!

How often do students need to practice?
This depends on the student's age and level of interest. On average, the minimum amount of practice required for improving on a weekly basis is an hour and a half (spread out over the course of a week).

What length of lesson should I book?
A 30 minute lesson is great for beginners and younger children (under 12). If you are over the age of 12 or have any previous experience with an instrument, it’s recommended that you book a 45 minute or 60 minute lesson.

How frequently do I book sessions?
Usually weekly, though some exceptions are made to book bi-weekly lessons.

How do payments work?
E-transfer or cash is accepted, by the first lesson of each month.

Where are your sessions offered?
All in-person sessions are held in downtown Guelph (B1-99 Wyndham Street).
